The ala wai has many problems including the temperature of the water. The temperature in the ala wai differs depending on where the water is. In the areas where there was a concrete bottom, the temperature was higher. It was also found that those areas also had a higher amount of flesh eating bacteria. The ala wai canal also has other problems such as trenches caused by a build up of sediments. Where the water was once 4 ft, is now extremely shallow. Ecosystems are also another huge problem that the canal is facing. Not only is there way too many invasive species living in the Ala wai but the native species are also having a difficult time surviving due to the bacteria and high temperatures. Different groups are trying to combat these problems by placing water sensors for things like temperature, depth, salinity, and ph levels. They are also going further up stream, and catching invasive species out of the water. These efforts have a had great success, but there is still a lot left to be done.
